Mission Beach: Surf Life Saving Club – Sign on day
April 27 @ 10:00 am - April 28 @ 3:00 pm
SIGN ON Day!
North Queensland residents invited to sign-on for 2019
Hundreds of families are expected to flock to their local beach next weekend (April 27 and 28) as surf clubs host sign on days.
In 2018, more than 300 nippers frequented North Queensland beaches from Port Douglas to Mission Beach every Sunday morning, developing critical skills and cultivating life-long friendships.
This year, local clubs are calling for even more local families to join the surf lifesaving movement.
Surf Life Saving Queensland Regional Manager North Queensland Rob Davidson encouraged parents to take the plunge and consider signing their children up for nippers.
With several clubs offering a trial day on April 28, he said parents and children would have a fantastic opportunity to experience nippers firsthand.
“Nippers is a healthy, fun and safe activity the whole family can enjoy. Kids from all backgrounds are provided with the opportunity to learn skills which will serve them throughout their life, while making new friends and enjoying our unique coastline,” he said.
Mr Davidson said nippers learnt a range of skills throughout the season including surf safety, beach conditions, how to negotiate the surf, board paddling, surf swimming, in-water rescues, CPR and first aid.
“The skills developed at nippers are essential to life on the Australian coast. Nippers is unique in that the kids are quite literally learning lifesaving skills that will last them a lifetime,” he said.
“These skills could be called upon at any time, in any situation, and could one day save a life.”
Mr Davidson also highlighted the number of opportunities for nippers aspiring to develop into competitive surf sport athletes.
“There are kids who love competitions and want to develop their surf sport career, and strive to be the next iron athlete. These nippers can enrol in additional training that complements the standard programs,” he said.
“Surf awareness and previous involvement in surf lifesaving are not a requirement. I encourage all families interested to visit their local surf club next weekend to find out more about our iconic nippers program.”
Remember we are still in the high stinger season – protection is a must!
