Reef, Islands and Whale Watching (Aug to Nov)

Mission Beach is the only place to visit the Great Barrier Reef, closer than any other on the Far North Coast. Spend more time underwater exploring this spectacular marine wonderland. Virtually unspoilt coral reefs await diving enthusiasts and first time snorkellers alike.

Full Day Trips to the reef operate daily with several operators.  A wonderful day out to experience this wonderful World Heritage reef.

Approximately 4km offshore, Dunk, Bedarra and the family group of islands make up Mission Beach’s aquatic playground. The remaining islands of the Family Group include Timana, Wheeler, Coombe, Smith, Bowden and Hudson Islands.  Campers can stay on Dunk, Wheeler and Coombe with a permit.  Camping equipment is available for hire.

The Mission Beach Water taxi provide services that run regularly throughout the day to Dunk Island.

Full & half day trips as well as overnight camping on local islands is a great way to experience the islands. Picnics and camping gear can be easily prepared to make your experience more relaxing.  You can have your own island for the night as there are limited camping permits available. Bookings can be made through the Dunk Island website.

Sailing is a great way to enjoy seeing around the islands.  Sunset cruises are also available which is a amazing way to unwind and watch the sun go down.

Whales are putting on a great show in the waters between Mission Beach and the islands.  All the above operators are experiencing great sightings daily during this time of year.
